Metropolitan Memorial Parks launches community consultation on potential new memorial park in Sydney

Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP) has today announced a community consultation process for a potential new modern memorial park site at Carnarvon Golf Course in central Sydney.

Following a directive from the NSW Government to address the urgent need for additional burial space, MMP conducted an extensive review of over 1,000 sites identifying Carnarvon Golf Course as the preferred location based on best-practice criteria for a modern memorial park.

The consultation period will run for two months, inviting feedback from the community, faith groups, and cultural representatives to ensure the proposed site aligns with community values and expectations.

The results of the consultation will contribute to a report to the NSW Government to enable a final decision.

MMP CEO, Denise Ora, said the need for accessible and sustainable burial space is pressing, with some of Sydney’s public cemeteries projected to exhaust space within a decade and some faith groups will face exhaustion in as little as 2 years.

“We’ve been tasked with exploring sustainable, long-term solutions that support Sydney’s diverse communities,” Ms Ora said. “Our vision for the Carnarvon site is to create a modern memorial park that not only meets essential burial needs but provides a public space for the whole community that incorporates open green spaces, landscaped areas, and amenities like walking paths. “We are eager to hear from the community as we work to address this critical need in a way that reflects and respects the diverse cultural fabric of Sydney.”

Already designated as Crown land, the Carnarvon Golf Course location was identified as it is central, close to Sydney’s largest existing cemetery Rookwood, and meets all the best practice criteria for a modern memorial park. Currently leased until 2035, this consultation process will help determine how best to balance current and future community needs.

This new site would represent the first public cemetery in the heart of Sydney in over 80 years, aiming to provide a contemporary, accessible memorial space that serves as both a place of remembrance and a valued community resource.

Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation process to learn more about MMP’s vision and share their perspectives.

Feedback gathered will be instrumental in shaping the final recommendations presented to the government.
