The governance of Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP) is based on clarity of purpose, alignment of effort with strategic objectives, and accountability. Authority cascades from the MMP Board to the CEO and Executive Management teams throughout the organisation.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors consists of six members including a chair, appointed for three-years to control the affairs and govern the strategic direction and financial management of MMP.

Board Sub-Committees

Audit and Risk Committee

The Audit and Risk Committee provides advice and assurance to the Board on the MMP accountability and control framework, including independently verifying and safeguarding the integrity of the MMP financial and performance reporting.

The Committee assists the Board by monitoring, reviewing and providing advice about the MMP governance processes, risk management and control frameworks and its external accountability obligations.

Finance and Investment Committee

The Finance and Investment Committee assists the Board to ensure the financial, investment, and capital strategies and operations of MMP are aligned and consistent with MMP’s strategic and operational plans and the requirements under the Crown Land Management Act 2016 (CLM Act) and Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013 (CC Act).

The Committee oversees the financial and investment strategies and activities of MMP, providing recommendations to the Board on MMP’s financial management, capital expenditure, procurement strategies, and investment activities. The Committee ensure policies and procedures are aligned with Treasury Directions and the relevant accounting standards.

Community Based Committees

MMP has established community based committees that provide important participation and engagement in our policy setting. Membership is drawn from the community and the committee is chaired by one of these independent members.

Community Engagement Committee

The Community Engagement Committee is an important forum for MMP to liaise and engage with communities on the cemetery services offered by MMP. There are twenty five members that reflect a diverse cross section of the community and our parks.

The committee is an important mechanism for MMP to meet aspects of the CLM Act and the CC Act to:

  • consider environmental, social, cultural heritage and economic factors in decisions about major MMP initiatives and projects
  • provide consistent, efficient, fair and transparent management of MMP cemeteries for the benefit of the people of New South Wales
  • consider the use of sites by the Aboriginal people of New South Wales because of the spiritual, social, cultural and economic importance of land to Aboriginal people and, where appropriate, to consider co-management of some sites

The community engagement committee is not a decision-making or regulatory body. The committee performs an advisory function for MMP and the Board.

Heritage Advisory Committee

The Heritage Advisory Committee provides MMP with independent expert advice across our memorial parks on:

  • conservation, management, communication and celebration of heritage items
  • Aboriginal heritage
  • historical, scientific, cultural, social, archaeological, architectural, natural or aesthetic value of a memorial pertaining to a renewable interment right that is due to expire and has not been reclaimed

The committee membership is made up of four independent and impartial members with a demonstrated interest and expertise in understanding the heritage, conservation, legislative framework and history of our memorial parks.

The Committee is empowered to make recommendations to MMP having regard to the diverse range of legislation impacting our stewardship of the land on which we operate.
