Friends of Rookwood Heritage Walk: Part 1

  • Explore Rookwood’s oldest burial grounds and uncover the stories of pioneers, visionaries and legends whose lives shaped Australia’s history.

    Step back in time and uncover the stories etched in stone. This fascinating walk takes you through the historic Wesleyan, Presbyterian, Independent and Jewish burial grounds, areas rich with ornate funerary art and symbolic design. Along the way, you'll encounter the resting places of remarkable figures including media pioneer John Fairfax, visionary clergyman John Dunmore Lang, the legendary bohemian Bee Miles and the hero who saved the Duke of Edinburgh's life in 1868. 

    Discover the history, artistry and intrigue that makes Rookwood one of Australia's most significant heritage sites. 

     

    This walking tour is hosted by Friends of Rookwood.

    Important Information:

    • Enter from East Street entrance, arrive at St Michael's Chapel off William Drive at 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
    • This is a walking tour 
    • Bookings essential— this is a paid event with proceeds raised by the Friends of Rookwood going towards restoration projects within the cemetery.
    • Please wear enclosed walking shoes, and bring sunscreen, a hat, and a refillable water-bottle.
    • Please dress for the weather including sun, wind or rain.
