Friends of Rookwood Irish Tour

Event Details

  • 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

  • $15

  • Rookwood General Cemetery

  • Discover the stories of Irish convicts, immigrants and pioneers whose struggles and triumphs helped shape Australia’s history on this heritage walk.

Almost a quarter of the convicts transported to Australia came from Ireland, some political prisoners sent without trial, others petty thieves seeking redemption. Later, waves of immigrants arrived to escape the devastation of the potato famine, chase goldfield fortunes or simply build a better life for their families.

On this tour, we explore the enduring legacy of these men and women and uncover the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in its early days. Walk with us through stories of resilience, faith and ambition that shaped generations and left an indelible mark on Australian history.
