Price guideA peaceful return to nature
At Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery, we offer natural burials, a thoughtful and environmentally conscious way to return your loved one to the earth. A natural burial focuses on simplicity and sustainability where the body is buried in its most natural form without embalming or cremation, and placed in a biodegradable casket within a protected green space. This option allows families to honour their loved ones while caring for the environment.
Why choose natural burials?
Natural burials are an ideal choice for those seeking a lower environmental impact. This eco-friendly option reduces the use of resources associated with traditional burial practices and allows graves to blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. It offers a meaningful way for families to ensure their loved ones rest in harmony with nature.
The process
A natural burial involves digging a grave to a maximum depth of 1200mm. The deceased is placed in a non-toxic biodegradable coffin, which is then covered with the original soil to allow natural decomposition. This process supports the earth’s regenerative cycle and ensures minimal disturbance to the natural environment.

A peaceful return to nature
At Frenchs Forest, we’ve dedicated a specific natural burial area called Nyarawan, meaning “far away,” to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding trees, vegetation, and water flow. This protected green space provides a peaceful resting place for natural burials, carefully selected to preserve the natural beauty of the landscape.
Only biodegradable materials, including coffins, caskets, and urns made from sustainable resources like cardboard, chipboard, organic cotton, bamboo, eucalyptus, linen, and hemp are used. Even the paint, if used, is biodegradable. These materials ensure that the burial has a minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
Locating the grave
Graves in the natural burial area are discreetly marked. Markers are placed beneath the mulch, and cemetery staff can accurately locate the burial site using these markers.
Memorial options
Families can place an inscription on a communal stone plaque, featuring standard information such as the name, date of birth, and date of death. This ensures a respectful and simple way to memorialise loved ones without disrupting the natural surroundings.
Leaving items at the gravesite
Only during the burial service, native fresh flowers may be left at the gravesite. To maintain the integrity of the natural burial area, other objects or materials that are not in line with the cemetery's eco-friendly regulations and intention of the natural burial areas may be removed.

Pre-purchasing options
We offer both single depth and double depth plots for families who wish to be buried together. Families can also pre-purchase and reserve a plot in the natural burial area, providing peace of mind for future planning.
