Shrouded cremation gives families more meaningful options in how they honour and farewell their loved ones. It allows for a gentler approach to cremation that aligns with a range of spiritual, cultural or personal values.

What is a shrouded cremation?

A shrouded cremation is a cremation where the deceased is wrapped in a cloth shroud instead of being placed in a coffin or casket, and is supported by a specially designed shroud bearer.

This differs from a shrouded burial, which also uses a cloth wrap but involves burial in the earth rather than cremation. Shrouded cremation is carried out in accordance with NSW Health approvals and offers a respectful and simplified alternative to traditional cremation services.

What is a shroud bearer?

A shroud bearer is a purpose-built wooden platform that supports the body during transportation and cremation. It is designed to provide dignity and stability while allowing for the respectful handling of the deceased, without the use of a coffin or casket.

Shroud bearers are crafted to ensure safety and ease for both the family and funeral professionals and are a key part of making this service possible.

Why families choose this option

Families may choose shrouded cremation for a number of reasons, including:

  • Simplicity: A more natural and minimalistic approach to farewelling a loved one.

  • Cultural or religious practices: Some traditions and beliefs favour or require burial or cremation without a coffin.

  • Environmental considerations: Fewer materials are used, making it an environmentally conscious choice.

  • Personal values: Some individuals wish for their funeral to reflect a life lived with humility, authenticity or connection to nature.

This service empowers families to choose an end-of-life experience that feels right for them.
